Artist in Residence on Research Expedition

Rutstein will embark on her 10th expedition at sea as an Artist-in-Residence in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina. She has been invited by a science team led by oceanographer Mandy Joye from the University of Georgia. Joye and Rutstein have collaborated since 2018 and this will be their third research cruise together, supported by the National Science Foundation.
The team will be sailing on the R/V Atlantis to explore methane seeps and the microbial networks that thrive in these extreme environments. Rutstein will dive for the fourth time to the ocean floor in the Alvin deep sea submersible. She will be work alongside the science team and create paintings on board the ship inspired by their research and experiences.
